Obsidian Creek Doodles is committed to raising mentally and physically healthy puppies. We know that our business is unique because we don’t provide a product or service- we provide life-long companions! That means we have extra responsibilities to ensure the well-being of all involved- the parent dogs, the puppies, and the forever families for each puppy.

Responsible breeding practices at Obsidian creek

Our dream for our program is to further the healthy, happy doodles breed. How? By ensuring the best quality of life for every individual involved in our program- which begins well before conception and carries on into the pup’s life with their new family.

Here are some of the responsible breeding practices used here at Obsidian Creek Doodles:

  • We offer lifetime support to every puppy and their new family. That means we are here to answer questions about training, health, grooming, and puppy care FOR LIFE! You will always have us to be a resource and a support to you.

  • We educate families on puppy health, grooming, training, and more to help the transition go smoothly. You will receive a “Preparing for Puppy” packet as soon as you place your deposit. Tons of helpful tips are shared with families daily and we are happy to continue to answer any questions you might have after you bring your baby home.

  • We offer a 1 year health guarantee. This ensures that you will receive the help you need if your puppy encounters a life threatening genetic illness. We carefully screen parents through genetics testing and health testing to be sure we are passing on healthy traits.

  • We carefully document EVERYTHING your puppy is learning and how we have worked with your puppy. When you pick up your puppy, all those records are sent with you so that you always know that your baby had the best start to life!

  • We provide puppies with emotional and mental stimulation as well as physical health. This includes: Early Neurological Stimulation, Startle Recovery Exercises, beginning crate/potty training, exposure to daily life experiences (lawn mower, door bell, garbage disposal, vacuum. etc), and MORE!!

  • Puppies are raised in our home, right alongside my family. My children play with the puppies every day for excellent socialization!

  • When pups are old enough to eat dog food, they are raised on a high-quality diet for optimum growth and development. We use high end puppy food as recommended by dogfoodadvisor.com.

  • I don’t sell puppies to just anyone who is willing to purchase them. I ask my customers questions in an effort to learn about what kind of a home my baby will be going to. Purchasing a puppy from Obsidian Creek is an open dialogue between both customer and seller to find what is best for the puppy.

    • We are also careful in selling breeding rights to only the best candidates. We do not support puppy mills or backyard breeding.

  • Families are encouraged to consider which puppy’s personality is the best fit- not just which puppy’s looks they prefer. To help in this process, Obsidian Creek offers adequate time and information about each puppy to help the families make the best choice. This ensures successful, long-term placements!

  • If your circumstances change, we are happy to take on the responsibility of re-homing your puppy- just because we love these babies so much, and we care about their long-term needs.

  • We follow all recommendations for healthy breeding.

    • All parents are CKC registered, meaning that all puppies may be registered by their new families if desired.

    • All females undergo genetic and health testing.

    • We never breed a female before 2 years of age. We never breed a female on her first heat.

    • We retire our females at an early age to avoid overworking her body with too many litters. All retired females are given a happy and safe life as pets.

    • We never breed a female until her body has fully recovered from her last litter. That typically means 6 months to 1 year between each litter., but may vary depending on the female’s emotional and physical needs.

    • We keep our litter together until 8 weeks of age, and then they can go to their new homes. Although puppies are weaned around 6 weeks of age, they still need that extra time for their learning, social skills, development, and mental health.

  • We follow all local and federal rules and regulations for healthy business practices for customers and each animal participating in our program.

  • We keep our breeding program small on purpose. We want to have plenty of love and attention for each of our animal family members.

    • This allows us to give each mother and puppy extra care, early training, socialization, and loving attention.

  • We are constantly trying to learn more about the breed, about animal care, about the breeding and birthing process, and more to keep up on the newest, best practices!

When puppies are indoors, we keep them in a safe, clean whelping box (unless of course we are having one-on-one training time, grooming, or play time).

  • It is spacious and clean.

  • The PBC pipes around the edges provide a safe place for puppies from birth to 3 weeks old. It is common for mothers to accidentally lie on babies, which can cause injury or even fatalities. This is one way that we keep our babies safe.

  • A heat lamp and/or head pads keep the puppies warm.

  • The plastic is easy to clean, helping me provide a sanitary environment for puppies. Cozy washable puppy pads are also used to give puppies traction when they nurse.

  • The door allows the dam to come and go as needed, without letting the puppies out. This helps her have needed alone time, which keeps her mentally and emotionally healthy. This helps her be the best mom she can be!

  • At 3 weeks of age, the puppies are introduced to potty training using a grass pad or litter box when indoors. As the puppies grow, they are encouraged to use the bathroom outside.

  • Puppies take naps in the kennels starting at 5 weeks of age and sleep overnight in the kennels at 6 weeks of age.

  • As you can see, the puppies are whelped and raised in our home!

And what about outdoor play?

Every puppy needs room to run and explore! We have 1 acre of beautiful land in Idaho.

  • We love to let our puppies have supervised fun time outdoors. This is great for exercise and socialization with their littermates, my other dogs, my kids, and all the neighbors- who love to come visit our puppies!

  • Stimulating toys are provided- such as a slide with stairs, a teeter totter, a tilting tray, and a tunnel!

  • We also use our yard for a training area for puppies! This is where the magic happens! Your puppy will be exposed to basic commands, new experiences, crates/kennels, and let’s not forget about potty training!

  • And let’s be honest, when momma dogs need a little break from their sweet babies, an acre of running space comes in very handy!
